Manchester United confirmed the depature of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday after their 4-1 loss against Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.
“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it it with regret that we have reached this difficult decision.” United said in a statement.
“While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long term success.” United added.
Solskjaer, who was given a three-year contract extension in August, leaves United seventh in the Premier League table after 12 games. They are 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea and have picked up just five wins.
The Norwegian manager was appointed interim manager after taking over from Jose Mourinho in December 2018.
Solskjaer guided The Red Devils to a second place finish in the league as well as the Europa League final, where they lost to Villarreal on penalties last season.
“Ole leaves our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as manager and our very best wishes for the feature. His place in the club’s history will be secure, ot just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a manager who gave us many great moments.” United said.
The decision means Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team for forthcoming games, starting with the trip to Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
United will want to replace Solskjaer with a new manager as soon as possible. According to reports, former Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, is a favourite man to replace Solskjaer at the Old Traffrod.
