Olivier Giroud chose to stay at Chelsea rather than join AC Milan. His decision made Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s hopes not come true.
The French national team player will stay at Stamford Bridge for the next season. Giroud’s contract will expire on June 30, 2021. He was even rumored to have refused to sign a contract extension, in order to find another club.
However, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia considers Giroud too valuable to let go. They also easily give a contract extension to the player.
“Olivier has been an important part of this club many times. Starting from the success of the 2018 FA Cup, to scoring 11 goals to win the 2019 Europa League,” Granovskaia said on the club’s official website, Saturday (5/6/2021).
“He continues to score important goals and we will never forget his efforts when he scored against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. With so much still at stake, there is only one decision we can make,” he said.
This season, despite not getting too many playing hours, Giroud still displays his best performance. He has scored 11 goals in 31 games in all competitions for Chelsea.
The arrival of Thomas Tuchel is believed to be the main factor Giroud chose to stay. Understandably, the German passport tactician uses it more often, than Frank Lampard.
Previously, news of Giroud’s move to AC Milan reached Ibrahimovic’s ears. He also said that the 34-year-old was a player his team needed.
“I would be very happy if Olivier Giroud joined AC Milan. We need players like him. He is a winner,” said Ibrahimovic, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on his Twitter account.
