Tottenham Hotspur coach Ange Postecoglou is on the list of tacticians who have the opportunity to replace Jurgen Klopp in the Liverpool coaching chair. However, Postecoglou doesn’t seem at all interested in coaching Liverpool because he prefers to be loyal to the team nicknamed The Lilywhites.
As is known, Jurgen Klopp will leave the Reds – Liverpool’s nickname – at the end of this season, precisely in June 2024. Since the decision was announced, many of the world’s top coaches, including Postecoglou, have been linked with becoming Klopp’s successor at Anfield.
However, Postecoglou actually refused to move to Liverpool next season. Even though he admitted that his name was on the Reds’ radar, he emphasized that he was not thinking about being Klopp’s replacement and wanted to remain loyal to Tottenham Hotspur, which was his priority.
“I might be on the shortlist (of Liverpool coaches). (But) I don’t think I want to say anything about it because I don’t think it would ever cross my mind about what my priorities are in life and profession at the moment ,” said Postecoglou, quoted from Goal International, Saturday (17/2/2024).
Furthermore, the coach with an Australian passport is aware that he only started his career at Tottenham Hotspur in July 2023 and there is still a long way to go. He doesn’t want his hard work to build the team he wants to end up in vain.
“Yes, it is. It’s not just a feeling, it is what it is. I’ve only been here for seven months, so that’s clear enough. I’m at pains to say that we still have a long way to go in terms of the football we want to play, the team we want to be , and the squad we want to have,” he explained.
However, Postecoglou did not rule out the possibility that one day he could leave Tottenham Hotspur.
“When we are not going well, then there is a question of whether we will be here. When you are potentially fine, there is still a question of whether you will still be here. The reality is that most of these things are out of our control. I don’t never worried about that,” Postecoglou said.
Apart from that, apart from Postecoglou, Bayer Leverkusen coach, Xabi Alonso, has also been linked as Klopp’s successor at Liverpool. He has managed to keep Leverkusen unbeaten in the German League so far and five points ahead at the top of the standings.
