Eleven-time world boxing champion Oscar de La Hoya confirmed he’ll be returning to the boxing ring after 12 years retired. He hasn’t fought since getting stopped by Manny Pacquiao in 2008.
The “Golden Boy” has only announced the date, July 3 within the framework of Independence Day of the United States, however, there is still no specific opponent or venue for the engagement.
De La Hoya has dedicated himself in recent years to promoting fights such as “Golden Boy Promotions”, where he has developed the careers of several fighters, such as the Mexican champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
However, the 48-year-old promoter now is keen to step in the ring again, motivated by the return of other legends such as Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez, in exhibition fights.
“The rumours are true, and I’m going to start sparring in the next few weeks. It’s a real fight I miss being in the ring, I love boxing. Boxing is what gave me everything I have today, and I just miss it.” De La Hoya said.
De La Hoya himself has a few possibilities to consider if he wants to step back into the ring, as do some other superstars if they want to capitalise on the opportunity.
Roy Jones Jr. has said he would be more than willing to lace on the gloves one more time to face De La Hoya. The former light heavyweight champion is coming off an eight-round exhibition with heavyweight icon Tyson last November, which ended a draw.
“Look, it’s been a long time, yes. But actually my jab feels faster than ever. I have to make sure that my conditioning is perfect, my health is good. And that’s going to take place in the next few weeks. So we’ll see.” De La Hoya said.
