Sergio Perez and Red Bull Formula 1 team has signed an extension of two years. The contract will bind both parties until the end of 2024 season.
Perez replaced Alex Albon for 2021 season at Red Bull, where he struggled to match his team Max Verstappen. He only managed to fetch five podiums, while his team-mate marked 18. The Mexican won only one race, which triggered his stay at Red Bull for one year.
In 2022, Perez performance supported Red Bull confidence in himself. He became the point scorer for the team to fight for the constructors championship.
This year, 32-year-old had to retire once while he won last week at Monaco Grand Prix. So far he has managed to remain in top four and he also managed to win podiums for four races.
At podium, Perez misspeak telling Christain Horner, Red Bull F1 team principal, of signing too soon. Two days later, the team announced the extension of two year with the Mexican.
The deal will see him partner Verstappen for two more year rather than one.
“For me, this has been an incredible week, winning the Monaco Grand Prix is a dream for any driver. And then to follow that with announcing I will continue with the team until 2024. It just makes me extremely happy,” Perez said.
“I am so proud to be a member of this team and I feel completely at home here now. We are working very well together and my relationship with Max, on and off the track, is definitely helping drive us forward even more.
“We have built tremendous momentum as a team. And this season is showing that, I am excited to see where that can take us all in the future.”
Perez currently hold third place on the drivers’ championship with 110 points. He has scored more than half of last year, 190, with only seven races so far.
Horner applauded Perez for his improved performance. He acknowledged that the latter has proved himself for further partnership.
“Time and again he has proved himself to not only be a magnificent team player. But as his level of comfort has grown. He has become a real force to be reckoned with at the sharp end of the grid,” Horner explained.
“This year he has taken another step and the gap to world champion Max has closed significantly.
“For us, holding onto his pace, race craft and experience was a no-brainer.”
