The war between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has just taken another step forward, with the US racetrack agreeing to invest more money, with backing from Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
The golf world war entered the melee phase. At the time of the Tour Championship, the tournament that closes the PGA Tour season, Commissioner Jay Monahan, the highest authority on the American track, appeared in front of the media to announce a new measure with an injection substantial finances.
The PGA Tour commissioner has decided against the expansion of LIV Golf (Super Golf League), as the Saudi Arabia-sponsored track prepares to announce its commitment to a new group of athletes, headed by Cameron Smith, the current Australian golfer. ranked second in the world and won The Open Championship.
LIV Golf has completely turned the sport upside down. Not only because the establishment of the track was sponsored by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign public investment Devil, but also because it forced the PGA Tour to react after decades of absolute domination in the golf world.
Two major North American responses to LIV were launched on Wednesday. First, the PGA announced major changes to the calendar system and adjusted some events, with the philosophy of bringing together the best golfers to play more often.
Soon after, the establishment of a new tournament TGL was also confirmed, organized by TMRW Sports – the newly established company of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and businessman Mike McCarley.
The TGL will not coincide with the PGA Tour, instead playing in parallel and Woods and McIlroy are both committed to attending. This tournament brings together the main stars of the PGA and competes on Monday nights, during prime time for television audiences, so as not to coincide with the events that run from Thursday to Sunday.
In the official TGL announcement, technology will dominate this tournament. There are 15 events per season and a team competition format. 16 golfers are divided into 3 teams to compete with each other, with a commitment to complete 18 holes in no more than 2 hours, much shorter than traditional competitions.
