The name Mauricio Pochettino returned to conversation after being fired by Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the season. Pochettino was named as one of the candidates for the new Premier League club, Newcastle United.
Newcastle began to list the names of big-name coaches to coach the team next season. Besides Pochettino there are other famous names such as Massimiliano Allegri and Rafael Benitez.
These three names are touted to be candidates for successor to coach Steve Bruce who will be kicked out at the end of the season. The Magpies do this as the club’s acquisition process enters the final phase.
Newcastle is one step away from Mike Ashley to Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman. He agreed to buy a team based in St James’ Park for £ 300 million.
Pochettino’s name was included in the list of candidates for attention because he happened to be unemployed. Pochettino is considered a big name coach who is considered suitable to lead the ambitious project of Bin Salman.
Pochettino is clearly not a careless coach. The cold hands of the Spaniard make strategy proved to have succeeded in making Tottenham ‘move up the class’ in five years.
He managed to make Tottenham a breakthrough in the establishment of teams that have bigger names like Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea. Tottenham with Pochettino slowly accustomed to competing at the top and disrupting the dominance of the Big Four.
Pochettino also led Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League final, although eventually defeated from Liverpool. In terms of play, Tottenham concocted by Pochettino was entertaining.
Pochettino is not a coach who likes pragmatic football. The former Espanyol coach wants his team to play the ball from the bottom and is happy with the pressing strategy since from the opponent’s defense.
The strategy contains risks but that approach was chosen by Pochettino. Pochettino is also a popular figure among players.
The only thing lacking from him is luck so he hasn’t won a title with the North London team.
With all these advantages, Pochettino is more than just worthy to lead a new era carried by Newcastle. But the question then is whether to train Newcastle is not a degradation in the 48-year-old coach’s career?
Pochettino should be patient until the end of the season and not in a hurry to make a decision if he is offered the position of manager of Newcastle with a salary that is certainly tempting. This is because the opportunity for Pochettino to coach top European clubs is wide open.
Pochettino is not impossible to be given the confidence to train Manchester United, Juventus, or even Barcelona at the beginning of next season. Understandably, the position of three coaches at these clubs is not entirely safe.
Pochettino has long been associated with MU. MU fans even had time to ask the coach born in Murphy, Argentina was immediately plotted to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after being fired by Tottenham at the start of the season.
The insistence came as Manchester United’s inconsistent appearance before the arrival of Bruno Fernandes in early January 2020. The voices so that Solskjaer was removed was also not impossible to hear if Manchester United’s performance declined again when the English Premier League resumed after the co-19 virus pandemic was over.
Maurizio Sarri’s situation at Juventus is also not as good as the position of Juventus who are topping the Italian League standings. Sarri was often the target of criticism because Juventus had problems with consistency and difficulty in winning with many goals.
In fact, in terms of material, Juventus players are superior to other teams. In addition to being strengthened by Cristiano Ronaldo, the depth of the Bianconeri’s squad is superior to both Inter and Lazio who are now competing with them in the race for the Scudetto.
Pochettino also had an interest in Barcelona to replace Ernesto Valverde before finally appointing Quique Setien. A similar offer is not likely to come back from Barcelona at the end of the season because Setien is actually not the top candidate to coach Lionel Messi et al.
Although it would be difficult to see Pochettino coaching the Blaugrana referring to his work as a former Espanyol player and coach. “I am a fan of Espanyol and I don’t think I need to say too much. Before becoming a manager, before becoming a player, loyalty is important and I am a big fan of Espanyol.”
If you look at the reputation he has, Pochettino is better to wait for an offer from a big club to come than to become a Newcastle coach with a lucrative salary. That way, the opportunity to decorate his coach’s career with a trophy will be realized.
