Poland Seals Euro 2024 Berth after Penalty Shootout Win over Wales

Poland secured their place at Euro 2024 with a tense penalty shootout victory against Wales in Cardiff on Tuesday.

The match itself finished scoreless after 120 minutes, but Poland held their nerve from the spot to win 5-4.

Robert Lewandowski, eager to add another major international tournament to his resume, was a constant threat throughout the match.

However, the Welsh defense managed to contain the prolific striker and force the game to penalties.

In the shootout, all five Polish takers converted their penalties, with Lewandowski stepping up to score his. Wales, on the other hand, saw their hopes dashed when Daniel James’s penalty was saved by Wojciech Szczesny.

While Lewandowski wasn’t at his absolute best, he remained a key figure in Poland’s attack. The 35-year-old Barcelona striker was heavily involved, leading the line, creating scoring chances with clever passes, and linking up well in the build-up play.

Despite missing a clear header and a long-range shot, the seasoned Barcelona forward displayed leadership during the penalty shootout.

Lewandowski calmly slotted home the first attempt, boosting his teammates’ confidence and paving the way for their victory.

Lewandowski showcased his enduring fitness and perseverance by battling through a late knock. While he may not be at his peak goal-scoring form at 35, his dedication and conditioning remain unmatched.

Even Poland coach Michal Probierz, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, struggled to find new words to praise his captain.

“There are few players like Robert Lewandowski in the world. He sacrificed himself for the team. He subordinated everything to the collective. With him, this team can still achieve a lot.” Probierz said.

The win means Poland will participate in their fifth consecutive European Championship. They have been drawn into Group D alongside France, the Netherlands, and Austria.
