Porsche Collaborates with iRacing, Holds Supercup Esports Competition

Fighting for a total prize of US $ 100,000 and the opportunity to be a guest of honor at the Porsche Night of Champions gala

One of the luxury car manufacturers from Germany, Porsche, revealed the newest esports competition, Porsche Esports Supercup . This competition is a competition for simulation racers from various parts of the world. In order to launch this tournament, Porsche collaborated with subscription-based gameracing simulators, iRacing.

Porsche Esports Supercup will be held on April 13, 2019 at Barber Motorsport Park, Alabama, United States. The drivers who compete are those who have been filtered through global qualifications held online by iRacing.

Whether on the qualifying title or in the Porsche Esports Supercup main competition later, racers compete with each other by using a Porsche 911 GT3. This car has been designed in such a way as in the iRacing game, so that it has a mechanic that works similar to the Porsche 911 GT3 in the real world. The Porsche 911 GT3 used itself has the same format as the GT3 Cup Challenge, a race competition held in various parts of the world.

One of the key reasons why Porsche wants to take part in the world of Esports Simracing, is because of the similarity between the conditions in the real world race and sim racing. Quoting Esports Insider, Fritz Enzingner, Head of Porsche Motorsport, then gave further comments.

“The addition of esports sim racing into our one-make cup competition, you could say as an effort to expand our wings in the world of motorsport competition. The presence of this competition will be an opportunity for simulator racers to join the Porsche Motorsport family internationally ”. Answer Fritz to Insider Esports.

Porsche Esports Supercup can be regarded as a virtual race competition with the first one-make format in the world. The term one-make cup or one-make racing itself is a race format. In the one-make cup competition, drivers are given one type of vehicle that is identical or very similar between racers to each other.

There are 40 spots that will be contested by simulator drivers from various parts of the world. Later in the final title, the simulator drivers will compete with their driving ability in a circuit that has its own history, Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy.

Simulator drivers will compete with racing abilities to compete for a total prize of US $ 100,000. Later, Supercup Esports champions will be invited as honored guests at the annual Porsche Night of Champions gala event.

Esports presence is arguably providing new ways for various brands to market their products. But it’s interesting to see how Porsche wants to strengthen their brand to a more specific gaming community, namely to the simulator racing community or sim racers. Will with this, racing sim will be the future for motorsport competition?
