Chelsea won 2-0 over Newcastle United in Week 24 of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge Stadium, Tuesday (16/2). The victory brought the Blues to the top four of the Premier League.
Marcos Alonso released the first attempt for Chelsea to break into the Newcastle goal in the third minute. However, Alonso’s left footed shot from inside the penalty box can still be caught by goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
Timo Werner missed one of his best chances of the first half, on the 25th minute. Werner received Marcos Alonso’s header.
However, the German striker could not take the opportunity to score a goal even though he was already in front of the Newcastle goal. The ball which Werner shoot is imperfect and goes wide of the target.
Chelsea was only able to score a goal in the 31st minute through the left footed shot of reserve striker Olivier Giroud who replaced Tammy Abraham in the 20th minute. The goal came from Werner’s action on the left.
The former RB Leipzig player then fired a left-footed shot which the goalkeeper could still tilt. However, the wild ball went to Giroud who was immediately greeted by a left footed shot and became a goal.
Timo Werner added to the Blues’ lead in the 39th minute. The Newcastle defender made the mistake of failing to clear Mason Mount’s corner perfectly.
The ball finally could be used by Werner to become a goal even though it was in a less favorable position. However, the goal became a debate, so referee Peter Bankes had to use VAR. In replays, Werner’s goals are deemed valid.
At the start of the second half, Newcastle opened up opportunities through Miguel Almiron’s shot. It’s just that, Kepa Arrizabalaga was able to make a save even though Almiron’s shot hit another player.
Newcastle did not stop trying to score a return goal despite trailing 0-2. In the 75th minute, Josep Willock’s header was pushed over by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
In the 78th minute defender Reece James also provided a threat to the Newcastle goal. After receiving N’Golo Kante’s pass, James fired a right-footed shot, but goalkeeper Darlow was more alert to block the opportunity with his left foot.
There were no additional goals in the remaining matches, Chelsea won 2-0 over Newcastle. The three points won by Chelsea took them to fourth in the Premier League standings, shifting West Ham United.
