Liverpool forwards Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah each scored twice in a 6-1 thrashing of Leeds United on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez also found the net as Liverpool recorded a second away win in 2023.
Liverpool collected 47 points from 30 matches, nine points behind Newcastle United in fourth place.
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp says all they can do is keep winning in their remaining eight matches and hope the teams above them slip up.
“They can win all their games and we win all our games and there is no chance to change anything,” Klopp said as quoted by ESPN.
“We have to play very good football. If we do, we will get results and then we will see where we are in the table,” he continued.
Leeds United had chances in the first half, but just like their 5-1 loss against Crystal Palace in the previous game, their defense was too exposed.
Leeds United are currently two points above the relegation zone after 31 matches.
Leeds winger Luis Sinisterra made it 2-1 early in the second half before Liverpool scored four more goals.
“It was a special second half, we played very well,” Jota told Sky Sports.
“We kept possession and tried to find ourselves in good positions. We scored some great goals,” continued Jota.
“It’s been a difficult season for me and the team, so it’s a relief for me to score goals. I always want to be involved, I also got assists in the first half, but I want to score more goals,” he continued.
This is the first win in six matches in all competitions for Liverpool.
“Obviously we knew it was going to be a tough game. We started with a clear plan and tried to get them to counterattack,” said Leeds defender Robin Koch.
Then we conceded two goals and it was a very difficult game against a team like Liverpool.
“It’s difficult for us but we have to put this game aside. We have three big games to come [against Fulham, Leicester City and Bournemouth].”
