Manchester United won 9-0 over Southampton in Week 22 of the Premier League which took place at Old Trafford Stadium, Wednesday (3/2).
The game has only been running for two minutes, Southampton must play with 10 people. Alexandre Jankewitz, who put his foot into Scott McTominay’s thigh in the race for the ball, was rewarded with a red card.
Man Utd immediately dominated possession. But not immediately able to penetrate the Southampton defense freely. The Saints who are under siege can appear solid.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka breaks the Man Utd deadlock. The Red Devils right-back struck the ball Luke Shaw sent in the 18th minute.
Seven minutes later, Man Utd doubled the lead. Marcus Rashford completed Mason Greenwood’s bait from the left.
Behind two goals and playing with 10 people, Southampton can still make it difficult for Man Utd. In the 28th minute David De Gea makes a crucial save to save James Ward-Prowse’s free kick.
Man Utd’s goal increased in the 35th minute. This time the ball from Rashford was made into the net by Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.
Four minutes later, Edinson Cavani headed the ball back to Shaw. Man Utd leads 4-0.
Starting the second half with an attack, Man Utd even conceded. But Che Adams’ goal in the 54th minute was ruled out for offside.
Man Utd just scored another goal in the 69th minute. Anthony Martial maximized the pass from Bruno Fernandes, who had just entered in the second half to replace Edinson Cavani.
Just two minutes from Martial’s goal, Man Utd scored the sixth goal through McTominay who took advantage of a wild ball from a Greenwood shot that was blocked by Alex McCarthy.
The 84th minute referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot for Bednarek’s foul on Martial. After seeing the video footage of the violation, Dean even then gave a red card to Bednarek. Man Utd then added a goal through Fernandes’ penalty.
The score changed to 8-0 in the 90th minute after Martial finished Wan-Bissaka’s pass.
During injury time, Daniel James added a goal for Man Utd so that the match ended with the number 9-0 on the scoreboard.
Man Utd now has 44 points, but is less on goal difference than Man City. The Citizens are recorded to have a difference of 24 goals and the Red Devils 19 goals.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team are back four points ahead of Liverpool who are ranked third in the Premier League standings.
