Manchester United won a dramatic 1-0 win over West Ham United in the 23rd week of the Premier League at Old Trafford, Saturday (22/1).
Substitute Marcus Rashford scored the winning goal for Man Utd. The English striker found the net for West Ham in the last minute of second-half injury time.
This result makes Man Utd penetrate the top four of the Premier League. Man Utd currently occupy fourth place with 38 points and West Ham have dropped to fifth with 37 points.
The Man Utd vs West Ham clash was fierce and tight. Both teams appeared solid in defense so that almost no dangerous opportunities were created during the 15 minutes of the match.
Man Utd got a chance to score in the 20th minute. Fernandes sent a cross that was directed into the penalty box but Cristiano Ronaldo was late to meet the accurate pass for a goal.
Another opportunity was obtained by Man Utd in the 22nd minute. Diogo Dalot who went up to help the attack tried to head the bait Anthony Elanga in the penalty box which was still far from the target.
Man Utd kept trying to score in the remaining time of the first half. However, the efforts made by Fernandes and his friends were still unable to penetrate the Hammers defense, which appeared solid.
Man Utd immediately got a golden opportunity at the start of the second half. Fred’s hard shot was released in the penalty box which could still be thwarted brilliantly by Alphonse Areola.
Bowen had a chance to score in the 54th minute. His shot slightly from outside the penalty box took advantage of a wild ball that was still thin on the left side of De Gea’s goal.
Varane almost brought Man Utd ahead in the 58th minute. Unfortunately, the French player’s header took advantage of the corner kick situation that was still over the West Ham crossbar.
The match was getting tougher after Varane’s chances. Man Utd and West Ham took turns attacking but no goals were scored.
Fernandes got a chance in the 78th minute. The Portuguese midfielder fired a slightly left footed shot from outside the penalty box which bounced well above the target.
Man Utd brought on Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial to add to the team’s offensive power in the remaining second half. However, it was West Ham who almost scored if Tomas Soucek’s header from Bowen’s corner was not thin on the right side of the Man Utd goal.
In the second half of injury time, Man Utd scored a goal which made the score 1-0. Marcus Rashford’s flick using Edinson Cavani’s low pass rattled the West Ham goal to make the score 1-0 until the second half ended.
