Following are the results of West Ham United vs Chelsea in the second week of the 2023-2024 Premier League, Sunday (20/8/2023). The Hammers managed to win 3-1 over their neighbors at the Stadium of London, London.
Two of West Ham’s winning goals were netted by Nayaf Aguerd (7′), Michail Antonio (53′), and Lucas Paqueta’s penalty (90+5′). The only goal for The Blues was scored by Carney Chukwuemeka (28′).
The hosts appeared to attack early in the fight. The result was reaped in the seventh minute. James Ward-Prowse’s corner kick bait was brilliantly headed by Aguerd to find Robert Sanchez’s goal.
After conceding, Chelsea immediately increased the intensity of the attacks. However, a good chance was only obtained in the 21st minute, and even then through Conor Gallagher’s speculative kick which Alphonse Areola was able to secure.
Efforts to equalize arrived in the 28th minute. Kurt Zouma’s mistake in blocking the ball allowed Chukwuemeka to freely shoot from inside the penalty box to beat Areola. Score 1-1!
Chelsea had the best chance of turning ahead in the 43rd minute after being awarded a penalty. Unfortunately, Enzo Fernandez’s execution was countered by Areola. The 1-1 score lasted until the West Ham United vs Chelsea match entered the break.

After the break, West Ham returned to appear fierce at the start. They came back ahead through Antonio’s goal in the 53rd minute. His shot from inside the penalty box, met Ward-Prowse’s pass, but Robert Sanchez could not hold it so the ball rolled into the goal.
After winning, West Ham instead had to play with 10 men after Aguerd was sent off for two yellow cards in the 67th minute. The visitors tried to take advantage of this situation to attack the host’s defense.
Instead of taking advantage, Chelsea even conceded in the fifth minute of injury time. Lucas Paqueta’s penalty ensured West Ham United won a landslide victory 3-1.
Pochettino explained that this condition is only the beginning for Chelsea. The Argentine coach believes his team will perform better in the future.
“We have to be stronger in situations like this because we know West Ham play deeper and their counter-attacks and set-pieces are really dangerous,” said Pochettino, quoted from FourFourTwo, Monday (21/8/2023).
“Disappointed, but this is just the beginning. We have to believe in the process. I think we will be stronger and will definitely be really competitive.”
