Problem Sending Athletes to the 2020 Olympics, Indonesia Wait for the IOC

Indonesia is still waiting for a decision from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding sending athletes to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which is scheduled to take place on July 24 to August 9.

To CNNIndonesia.com, Chairman of the Indonesian National Olympic Committee (NOC) Raja Sapta Oktohari said he did not want to rush to make a decision.

“We are patient to see future developments. The IOC will certainly not take risks. Indonesian NOCs fully trust the IOC to make decisions related to the Tokyo Olympics because we believe they must be thinking the best for athletes,” Okto said, Monday (3/23) ).

Last week Indonesia had the opportunity to express its opinion regarding developments in the Olympics amid a corona virus outbreak in a teleconference meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach.

On that occasion Okto told Bach that the Indonesian NOC had communicated with China and Japan to provide support. He also mentioned giving trust to the IOC to make decisions.

“In principle, the IOC is asking for support from Asian NOCs. Regarding the Olympic schedule, there has been no change and will still see developments going forward,” he said.

After briefly insisting on holding the 2020 Olympics in accordance with the original plan, the IOC began opening options to postpone the biggest sports party in the world.

“The IOC will coordinate with the 2020 Olympic Committee and the authorities in Japan and the Tokyo City Government to complete an assessment of the development of the world health situation and its impact on the Olympics, including a delay scenario,” the IOC statement was quoted as saying by AP.

While the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) will certainly not send athletes to Tokyo 2020 if they continue to be held amid a corona virus outbreak. Canada explicitly asked the IOC and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to postpone the Olympics in the next year.
