Andy Lonergan was contracted by Liverpool as a goalkeeper because of Alisson Becker’s injury. Alisson Becker suffered an injury in the first match of the English League, Liverpool vs Norwich City on Friday (9/8/2019).
Becker’s Injury
In the Liverpool vs Norwich match at Anfield Stadium, Alisson only played 36 minutes. The Brazilian national team goalkeeper’s position was then replaced by Adrian. Adrian is successor of Simon Mignolet who was obtained free from West Ham United.
“From the diagnosis, Alisson will be sidelined for several weeks,” coach Juergen Klopp said on Liverpool’s official website. With Alisson’s injury, Liverpool practically only have Adrian and young goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
The number of two goalkeepers is considered risky for Liverpool who will fight in the Premier League – the top caste of the English League, League Cup and Champions League. Moreover, the Reds – Liverpool’s nickname – will also appear in the European Super Cup.
Liverpool vs Chelsea duel in the European Super Cup took place in Istanbul on Wednesday (08/14/2019). Adrian will be Liverpool’s main goalkeeper in this fight.
However, Juergen Klopp also needs an experienced coating goalkeeper just in case. “For the number one position, Adrian is certain,” Klopp said. “Caoimhin may also be number 2, but we must first look at his work with the U-23 or U-21 teams,” he said. For this reason, Liverpool’s management then pulled Andy Lonergan.
Lonergan actually participated in the Liverpool pre-season tour, when Alisson had not returned after defending Brazil in the 2019 Copa America. “In the match, we can enter a number of reserve players,” Klopp continued. “Andy could have been one of them,” said the German coach.
