Football world lost one of its greatest players. Argentina national team legend, Diego Maradona, reportedly died on Wednesday (11/25/2020). The news of Diego Maradona’s death was conveyed by well-known Argentine media, TyC Sports. “News that we never want to convey. Rest in peace, Diego,” wrote the official Twitter account TyC Sports.
According to TyC Sports reports, Maradona has been hospitalized several times since 2015. Recently, he was rushed to the Ipensa hospital located in La Plata, Argentina, on Monday (11/2/2020) or three days after his 60th birthday.
After recovering from the surgery of blood clotting in the brain or commonly known as subdural hematoma, Maradona reportedly lived in a house in Tigre, Buenos Aires. However, on Wednesday (11/25/2020), Diego Maradona was declared dead due to a heart problem.
Maradona, who was born in Lanus, Buenos Aires, started his football career with Argentinos Juniors in 1976. Then in 1981, the left-handed player joined one of Tango’s top clubs, Boca Juniors.
Maradona started his European adventure when he was recruited by Barcelona in 1982, where he played for two seasons at the Camp Nou Stadium. However, Maradona’s career did not go smoothly in Spain.
He then moved to Italy to defend Napoli in 1984. It was at this club that Maradona achieved great success. He brought Napoli to various prestigious titles, including two Serie A scudettos, one Coppa Italia, and one UEFA Cup (now the Europa League).
Seven seasons in Napoli’s uniform, Diego Maradona has scored 115 goals in 259 appearances in all competitions. The success of Maradona in elevating Napoli’s prestige in Italy and Europe made him adored by the San Paolo public. Diego Maradona’s name is like a god for the club with the nickname I Partenopei.
After leaving Napoli, Maradona returned to Spain for one season to strengthen Sevilla. He then returned to Argentina with Newell’s Old Boys as his destination, then hung up his boots in 1997 with Boca Juniors. At the international level, the owner of the full name Diego Armando Maradona is an Argentine hero when he won the 1986 World Cup which was held in Mexico.
Despite not scoring in the final when Argentina beat West Germany 3-2, Maradona impressed throughout the tournament byscoring five goals. One of Diego Maradona’s iconic moments at the 1986 World Cup was when he scored the “Hand of God” goal against England in the quarter-finals which ended 2-1 to win Argentina.
After a goal that drew protests from the Englishman, Maradona then bewitched the crowd at the Azteca Stadium as he danced solo through four opponents before beating Peter Shilton for the second time. Throughout his career with the Argentina national team, Diego Maradona scored 34 goals in 91 appearances.
