PSG vs Arsenal: Finally Winning, But the Story Isn’t Over Yet

PSG and Arsenal will meet again in the second leg of the 2024/25 Champions League semifinals. This time, the Parc des Princes will be the deciding stage on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

After losing in the league phase, PSG managed to reply in the first leg of the semifinals. Ousmane Dembele’s quick goal in the 4th minute was the only difference in London.

It wasn’t just a narrow victory. It was PSG’s first victory over Arsenal in the history of their meetings.

Before the duel at the Emirates, PSG had never been able to beat Arsenal. From the five previous meetings, PSG could only draw three times and lose twice.

However, this time it was different. Luis Enrique’s team came with a steely mentality after eliminating Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Dembele became the hero, bringing PSG to a 1-0 lead and bringing his club closer to the Champions League final for the second time.

PSG’s victory in the first leg was like paying off a debt from a 0-2 defeat when visiting the Emirates in the league phase. At that time, goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka defeated them.

Previously, in the 2016/17 season, the two teams also matched each other in the group stage. Scores of 1-1 and 2-2 colored the competition which at that time was still undecided.

The oldest meeting occurred in the semifinals of the 1993/94 European Cup Winners’ Cup. Arsenal emerged victorious after winning 2-1 on aggregate, then won the competition with a 1-0 victory over Parma in the final.

Both teams have never lifted the Champions League trophy. PSG tasted the final in 2020, but lost to Bayern Munich.

Arsenal waited even longer. Their first and only final took place in 2006, losing to Barcelona at the Stade de France.

Now, both are just one step away from the final. Will PSG or Arsenal set foot at the Allianz Arena?

Arsenal reached the semifinals after eliminating defending champions Real Madrid. They won 5-1 on aggregate, including a convincing 2-1 victory at the Bernabeu.

Meanwhile, PSG have eliminated two English teams in a row, proving their mettle against Premier League opponents.

The head-to-head record still favors the Gunners. PSG’s narrow first-leg lead could be enough—or it could backfire.
