Formula 1 have announced that the Qatar Grand Prix will rejoin the F1 calendar this season, with the race scheduled to take place on 19-21 November.
It will replace the Japanese Grand Prix in the 2021 calendar, after Japan were forced to give up their place on the calendar for health and safety reasons.
“The transition from being useful to F1 in 2021 to a long-term strategy was short and simple. And the vision for F1 to be the showcase for Qatar after the FIFA World Cup in 2022 has been the driving force behind this long-term deal.” F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.
“We have shown that we can continue to adapt. There is a huge interest in our sport and the hope from many places to have a Grand Prix.
“The enormous effort of all the teams, F1 and the FIA has made it possible to offer a calendar of 22 races, something impressive in a challenging year and something we can all be proud of.” Domenicali added.
Losail International Circuit is one of the most famous track in Qatar. The track is 5.380 kilometres in length, with a main straight of 1,068 metres. It is surrounded by artificial grass to stop the sand encroaching on the track.
According to reports, Qatar will also join the F1 calendar in a 10-year deal from 2023.
“This is a very special day for Qatar Motorsport. And our nation’s ambitions as a series of major sporting events.” Qatar President Abdulrahman Al-Mannai said.
“I am very proud to have been able to support Formula 1 by intervening and hosting a race in our country in such a short amount of time, while securing an innovative long-term agreement with F1.” he added.
