Luka Modric has been devoted to Real Madrid since the summer of 2012. However, the Croatian midfielder’s contract term will end on June 30, 2021 and so far there has been no talk of renewal.
According to former Madrid striker Davor Suker, Los Blancos are obliged to extend Modric’s contract. Because he sees that his compatriot still has an important role in the team, even though Modric is already 35 years old.
Currently Modric is still part of the Madrid core team. He still has the ability to be a midfield general and is in good physical condition to play the highest level matches.
Therefore, according to Suker, there is no reason for Madrid not to renew Modric’s contract. Moreover, the former Tottenham Hotspur star has a good leadership spirit, which is very much needed in guiding the young players of El Real.
“Modric is a leader, number one, both in the world and in Croatia. He is a loyal player, “said Suker, as quoted by Football Espana, Saturday (12/12/2020).
“Physically he is very strong, and his performances in the last few games, in the Spanish League and Champions League, show this,” he continued.
“He has to continue at Real Madrid, and hopefully he will play for Madrid for many more years. But the last word (the final decision) is in the hands of the club director and coach, “said Suker.
In the summer of 2012, Modric was signed by Madrid for 35 million euros. However, at first he struggled to show a good performance in the team.
In his first season, Modric was even labeled as the worst buy in the Spanish League. Even so, Modric did not immediately give up and continued to fight for his status so that he later played an important role in midfield.
His combination with Toni Kroos and Casemiro has led Los Blancos to three consecutive Champions League trophies. In addition, Modric himself has also been recognized as one of the best players in the world by winning the Ballon d’Or 2018.
