Real Madrid won over Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals at Stamford Bridge, London. Los Blancos beat the Blues with a score of 3-1.
Karim Benzema became the hero of Real Madrid in this match. He scored a hat-trick of three goals at minute 21, 24, and 46. The only goal from Chelsea was scored by Kai Havertz in the 40th minute.
This result is an important capital for Real Madrid when they play the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. On the other hand, the defeat by a two-goal difference made Chelsea have to work extra hard in the second meeting.
In another match, Bayern Munich surprisingly lost to Villarreal when they traveled to Estadio de la Ceramica in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
Bayern Munich, who was seeded, was defeated by a narrow score of 0-1. Villarreal’s only goal was created by Arnaut Danjuma when the game had only been running for eight minutes.
This was Bayern Munich’s first away defeat in the Champions League for nearly five years.
Arnaut Danjuma became Villarreal’s hero when he fired home a measured shot from Dani Parejo’s pass that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer couldn’t keep out.
This is a crucial victory for Villarreal before next week travel to Bayern Munich headquarters to play the second leg match at the Allianz Arena.
Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel could not hide his disappointment when his team was shaved off by Real Madrid. Tuchel, who is a coach from Germany, said his team had a very bad result in this match.
Tuchel admitted that Chelsea played very badly, especially in the first half. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Blues suffered a huge defeat at home.
“It’s a huge loss and one of the worst first half I’ve ever seen us at Stamford Bridge,” Tuchel said.
“At a level like this, you can’t play like this, individually and as a team. From all of us it’s not enough so far. We didn’t do what we used to do and we fell far short of our standards. Then you lose.”
Playing at home did not make Chelsea able to win. Tuchel also revealed what was wrong with his team in the match.
“Everything. Not only how open we were, but where we passed the ball, how we passed the ball, when we passed the ball. Where we attack, our intensity, our challenge, our desire.”
“The first half was very far from the standard we set ourselves. We can’t complain when we lose half this round,” he concluded.
