Roger Federer dropped out of the ATP top 10 for the first time in more than five years when the new rankings were released on Monday.
With the entry of Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz into the round of 16 of the ATP Masters in Indian Wells, the 40-year-old slips to eleventh place in the new rankings.
Federer will drop a total of 900 points from his 2019 Basel Open title and ATP Finals appearance. As Such, he could drop to his lowest ranking of since 4th June 2021.
The Swiss tennis icon had a 15 month spell on the injury sidelines after having back to back knee surgeries 2019. Federer returned in March and played five events before revealing he will need another knee surgery that will leve him out of for many months.
“I’m feeling strong and excited it last year and I was surprised how easy for me to go through the rehab process because I know it’s not the easiest thing to do.” Federer said.
“I wish I could be back on a tennis court as quick as possible, but I have to be patient and it’s a slower period right now. I’ve got to take it step-by-step, so far, so good, I am very happy.” Federer added.
Federer had lived a truncated in 2016 season, on the sidelines for several months due to knee injury. He managed a thunderous comeback, winning the title at the Australian Open in 2017 an briefly regaining the place of world No.1 in 2018.
