Roger Federer congratulates Team World for coming back admirably and winning against Team Europe in the 2022 Laver Cup season.

For the first time in Laver Cup history, Team World beat Team Europe. Entering the last day of the men’s team competition, Team Europe won 8-4 over Team World.

But Team World appeared convincingly to claim a 13-8 victory. Even so, Team Europe still has a 4-1 lead against Team World.

“Congratulations to Team World, what an amazing comeback,” Federer said. “I feel very confident going into the last day but great job Johnny Mac (Team World captain, John McEnroe) and the members of Team World who played amazingly, you guys deserve it. My team also played fantastically, I enjoyed every minute of it.”

“It was amazing, a little emotional. But I recovered, the team recovered too. I hope I don’t lose the team, but I had a great time and I can’t thank you enough for that. I’m looking forward to next season in Vancouver. I will also be there and support both teams from different positions.”

“Thanks to Rod Laver, your presence means everything to us players, so we can embrace generations and inspire the next generation to emerge. And thanks to the audience, you make everything great.”

The 41-year-old has decided to retire from tennis after the Laver Cup this season. On the first day, he played his first match since Wimbledon in 2021. In the final match of his career, he joined forces with Spain’s Rafael Nadal to play in doubles. But the two tennis stars lost in three sets to the US duo of Team World, Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.

After the match ended, Roger Federer greeted the crowd and gave a few emotional words. Since the beginning of this week, he has officially become a former tennis player.

This season’s Laver Cup has featured some impressive matches, but that edition will forever be remembered as the place where Federer’s career ended.
