Manchester United won 2-1 over Villarreal thanks to the winning goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo on the second matchday of Group F of the Champions League at Old Trafford Stadium, Thursday (30/9).
Ronaldo’s goal in second-half injury time earned Man Utd their first win in the Champions League this season. Man Utd now occupy the third position in Group F by collecting three point or one point adrift of Atalanta who are the leader of the standings.
De Gea was the busiest figure in the Man United camp at the beginning of the first half. The Spanish goalkeeper made three saves that saw Villarreal fail to score.
De Gea twice thwarted Arnaut Danjuma’s chances. Meanwhile, another Villarreal opportunity that was obtained by Paco Alcacer was brilliantly thwarted by De Gea.
Villarreal got another chance in the 21st minute. Alberto Moreno had a chance to take advantage of a corner but his shot still did not meet the target.
Man Utd struggle to keep out of pressure Villarreal. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad has never been able to show their dominance.
In the 30th minute, Villarreal got another chance to score. Alcacer escaped the offside trap but his shot just outside the penalty area was narrowly on the left side of the Man Utd goal.
Man Utd can only do sporadic attacks against Villarreal. Opportunities were obtained through Paul Pogba’s speculative kick which was still easily secured by Geronimo Rulli.
Towards the end of the first half, Villarreal almost conceded due to a communication error between Rulli and Alberto Moreno. Moreno tried to block a long ball sent by a Man Utd player and the ball he blocked was thin next to the Yellow Submarine goal.
In the second half, Villarreal opened the scoring first over Man Utd. Danjuma’s measured pass was able to be cheated by Alcacer from close range to break into de Gea’s goal and make the score 1-0 in the 53rd minute.
Three minutes later, Man Utd had a chance to score. Bruno Fernandes fired speculation from outside the penalty box which is still on the right side of the Villarreal goal.
In the 60th minute, Man Utd managed to make it 1-1. Fernandes’ bait from a dead ball was met by Alex Telles’ first time kick from outside the penalty box which shook the Villarreal goal.
Man Utd are getting excited to score goals after the score drew 1-1. One chance came for Man Utd from substitute Edinson Cavani but his header was still missing in the 79th minute.
Seven minutes before the game ended, the Man Utd goal almost conceded. Villarreal substitute, Boulaye He had a chance in front of the Man Utd goal but was still blocked by the Red Devils defender.
When the match was expected to end in a draw, Ronaldo became the hero of Man Utd’s victory in injury time. Ronaldo broke into Villarreal’s goal through a flick from close range in the penalty box and made the score change to 2-1 and lasted until the game was over.
