Sack Galtier, PSG Appoints Luis Enrique as New Coach

Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have appointed Luis Enrique as their new coach, the club announced on Wednesday.

PSG are looking at a number of candidates to replace Christophe Galtier, who was sacked on Wednesday, including former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann, who held talks with the club but preferred former Barcelona and Spain coach Luis Enrique.

“Attacking identity is not negotiable — that is my philosophy,” Luis Enrique said in his presentation on Wednesday as quoted by ESPN.

“You have to adapt to your players, my job is to get the best out of my players individually and collectively.”

“I am committed to putting together a winning team and I have no doubt that I will be able to do that and give PSG fans something they love,” Enrique continued.

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said the arrival of Luis Enrique would mark the start of a “new cycle, with a new style of play.”

Luis Enrique has enjoyed coaching spells at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona, where he led to a treble in 2015 and another LaLiga title in 2016.

Enrique left Barcelona in 2017 before taking over as Spain coach a year later, and although only briefly following the death of his daughter, Luis Enrique led the country to a runners-up finish in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League.

He also captained Spain at the 2022 World Cup but left after they were knocked out in a disappointing round of 16.

Luis Enrique took over at PSG during a turbulent time for the club. Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos have departed this summer, while Kylian Mbappe has confirmed he intends to leave on a free transfer next year.

ESPN also reported last month that Neymar was also open to leaving mother Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG lifted the Ligue 1 title for a record-breaking 11th time this season, but a disappointing last-16 exit from the Champions League saw coach Christophe Galtier sacked after just one season in charge at PSG.
