The organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are reportedly removing the sport of breakdancing. In fact, breakdance has just made its debut as a sport competing for medals, not an exhibition, at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Although breakdance originated in the United States, the host chose to remove it from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
However, this is not the first time a sport has been removed from the Olympics. Since the first modern Olympics were held in 1896, a number of sports have been removed, either temporarily or permanently.
Hot air balloon racing
Hot air balloon racing was one of the sports competed in the 1900 Paris Olympics. Hot air balloon drivers competed in terms of distance traveled, height reached, and the best photo taken from the balloon. However, this hot air balloon racing sport was removed and will no longer be competed in the next Olympics.
Pigeon shooting
Still from the 1900 Paris Olympics, another match that no longer exists is the sport of shooting live pigeons. In this contest, the organizer released pigeons into the air in front of a competitor, who then shot as many pigeons as possible. Like hot-air balloon racing, live pigeon shooting only appeared in the Olympics once.
Pistol duel
In 1906, Athens hosted the Intercalated Games, which were not recognized by the IOC as an official Olympic event. The 1906 Intercalated Games even introduced another sport, pistol duel. However, instead of shooting real people, the competitors shot dummies. This event reappeared at the 1908 London Olympics, where competitors shot at each other, but with wax bullets.
Art contest
Starting at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics and continuing through the 1948 London Olympics, painting and sculpture, music, architecture, and literature were contested. Some people competed in both sports and art, and two people even won medals in both. The IOC reportedly stopped the art contest because many of the participants were professional artists, whereas the Olympics were supposed to highlight amateurs.
Single synchronized swimming
Reported from the Britannica page, synchronized swimming was first competed as a sport at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. It was stopped and competed again at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, but was replaced by the team synchronized swimming number at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Tug of war
Tug of war was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920. This competition was carried out by teams of five people who competed for strength. Unfortunately, this game was stopped after the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. Currently, tug of war fans are still trying to get the Olympics to bring back this sport. The International Tug of War Federation is said to be trying to campaign to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bring back tug of war.
Golf
Until 2016, golf had only been competed twice at the Olympics, namely at the 1900 and 1904 Olympics. The 1900 Paris Olympics competed for men’s and women’s numbers and in 1904 in St. In St. Louis, Missouri, the team golf event replaced the women’s event. After a 112-year hiatus, the sport returned to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Softball
After being featured in the Olympics from 1996 to 2008, softball disappeared from the list of sports at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, then returned at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. According to NBC Bay Area, softball will return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Baseball
Baseball first appeared at the 1904 Olympics and was later made a medal event at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. The sport is missing from the 2024 Paris Olympics due to scheduling issues between the Olympics and baseball competitions. But like softball, baseball is also planned to return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Karate
Karate successfully debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, featuring 80 participants divided into two men’s and two women’s divisions. However, the IOC chose to remove the Okinawan martial art from the 2024 Paris Olympics, citing its lack of entertainment value and ability to attract a younger audience.
