Samuel Umtiti on Sunday has extended his a new five-contract at Barcelona, tying him to the LaLiga club until at least 2023. Ending speculation he could leave the club this summer.
The 24-year-old centre back was hired for €25 million in the 2016 summer on a two-year deal. He has paired with Gerard Pique at the heart of the Catalan’s defence.
“Barcelona and the player Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement for the renewal of a contract that will bind both parties for the next five seasons,” Barca told in a statement released.
“The act of signing will take place Monday, at 10 a.m. in the Camp Nou, and later the player will speak to the media. A great piece of news for the Barcelona fans, Samuel Umtiti will continue to wear the Cule shirt until 2023.” Barca added.
Umtiti’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2018 and the defending LaLiga champions are keen for the Frenchman to extend his stay amid persistent media reports of a possible move to the Premier League clubs.
The France International has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, with speculation in Premier League that a €60 million switch will be completed this summer, when the transfer window opens.
The Red Devils’ head coach Jose Mourinho has been known for his strong defensive game style this season which has often been criticised by many fans. But the Portuguese coach has identified Umtiti as a next transfer target.
Speaking ahead of 2018 World Cup in Russia last week, Umtiti said he is so happy to renew his contract with the giant and to play with the team-mates in 2018/19 season.
“It is clear I want to renew my contract at Barcelona and I hope to be with the team next season. I’m at a club that allowed to me to realise my dream of playing there,” Umtiti told to L’Equipe.
“I’m still under contract at the moment. So for me to leave, either they throw me out the door or I decide to leave.” Umtiti added.
Umtiti made 34 appearances and scored a goal for Barcelona this season, and he’s keen to win the LaLiga title with Barca once again in next season.
