With less than two months from his return to the ring, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) has finally found announced his opponent.
In June, Canelo was stripped of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) title after failing to agree a fight for Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
And now, Canelo will face off against WBO light heavyweight world champion Sergey Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KOs). The fight will take place on November 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
It will be a first fight in light heavyweight for Canelo. He is keen to face Kovalev, in an attempt to become a four-weight world champion. The Mexican is currently unified middleweight world champion.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Oscar De La Hoya, previously he promised will soon announce the next opponent for the world’s best fighter.
“We will be announcing the date (for the return of Canelo), we will announce the opponent. He is going to fight at the end of this year.” De La Hoya said.
“We are already negotiating that. We are his promoters, we will continue working with him and we will make the best fights to the Public.” De La Hoya added.
Kovalev, meanwhile, he will make the second defense of his WBO title after first win over Russian Anthony Yarde in August 24. It was his 16th consecutive world championship fight.
Previously, the “Krusher” held the unified WBA (Super), IBF and WBO titles between 2013 and 2016, and the WBO title for a second time from 2017 to 2018.
If Canelo wins over Kovalev, De La Hoya will soon announce the next opponent for his star. He believes the WBO junior middleweight world champion Jaime Muguia will be in the opponent’s role.
“Why not? Obviously when you have two Mexicans fighting inside the same ring you will have firewroks, so why not?” De La Hoya said.
“Maybe next year, maybe in two years. Jaime Munguia is young and he has a long way to go in this sport and I think a Canelo-Jamie Munguia fight would be excellent all over the world.
