Sergio Aguero broke his silence, claiming there is no such thing as a clause, and insisting he would still join Barcelona if given the opportunity.
The 33-year-old Argentinian star joined Barca on a free transfer from Manchester City in June, signing an initial two-year contract at Camp Nou.
However, after Lionel Messi unexpectedly left to join PSG in August, Spanish media revealed that Aguero could cancel his contract and would leave to follow in the footsteps of his Argentina teammate.
“Even if Barca is in the current situation, I will still sign a contract with Barca. From the start, I knew Barca’s financial situation and I knew I couldn’t get the same at Manchester City, but I told my agent that money doesn’t matter, I want to go to Barcelona!” Aguero said.
“When I signed this contract, the fact that Leo’s future was still unclear. My contract has nothing to do with Leo, everything is an invention of the media.” Aguero added.
Aguero admitted to being stunned when Barca announced they couldn’t keep Messi at Camp Nou at all.
“I didn’t ask him much in the summer, when we were on international duty in the Copa America. He told me it was being sorted. So I was shocked when he left, just like everyone at Barca.” Aguero said.
Aguero has yet to make his debut for a the Catalan club due to a calf injury that will keep him out of action until at least October. However, he believes that when he returns, he can can help Barca fight in all competitions.
“Barcelona always has to fight for every title. I don’t think we are appreciated in the Champions League, but other teams will have to respect us. Maybe people don’t expect much from us in the Champions League, but it would be a mistake to underestimate Barca.” Aguero said.
