Verona took the initiative early in the match and took the lead with just five minutes of play when Barak latched onto the ball from goalkeeper Rui Patricio’s imperfect anticipation.
Roma tried to retaliate but struggled to break through Verona’s defence, forcing Lorenzo Pellegrini to make long-range speculation shot which goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo was still easily tamed.
Instead of retaliating, the Roma goal conceded again in the 20th minute when Tameze completed a combined attack between Ivan Ilic and Gianluca Caprari with a powerful strike that Patricio couldn’t keep out and Verona kept the score 2-0 until halftime.
Roma tried to kick in from the start of the second half, but the attack which was ended by Jordan Veretout’s shot from inside the penalty box still ended up sideways from the visitors’ goal.
Roma’s hard work finally paid off when Volpato, who had only played for Felix Afena Gyan for three minutes, was able to capitalize on a wild ball inside the opponent’s penalty box to reduce the hosts’ deficit to 1-2 in the 65th minute.
The goal fired the Roma players into equalizing in the 84th minute when Bove managed to optimize the situation for a corner with a close-range effort that found the net.
Both teams tried to chase the winning goal, but Tammy Abraham’s shot was blocked by the Verona defense. Meanwhile Kevin Lasagna’s header was also unable to penetrate the Roma back line, so the 2-2 score lasted until dispersal.
