Sevilla refused and dismantled the bad side of the formation of the European Super League which was initiated by 12 top European clubs on Sunday (18/4).
Sevilla’s rejection was conveyed through a release on their official website on Monday (19/4). The club, nicknamed Los Nervionenses, also revealed a number of the deficiencies of the league led by Real Madrid President Florentino Perez.
“Looking at the news of the creation of a new competition organized and regulated privately by certain European clubs from various countries, the Sevilla Council would like to state openly its complete objection to the tournament based solely on economic parameters and outside of UEFA, an institution that brings together various football associations. on the continent, “said a Sevilla statement.
Furthermore, the six-time Europe League champion considered the European Super League to be against the spirit of sport in general and also the ethos of football, because it was not formed openly or by limited invitation.
“Apart from that, the formation of the Super League will only fulfill personal interests which seem to enrich the founding club which already has a much larger budget than other clubs,” said Sevilla.
“It will impoverish football in general and the teams outside the Super League. At the same time, it will be a crushing blow to society and punish most of the true football fans who will be left without the true essence of our sport,” he said. Sevilla added.
On the other hand, the team that is now being coached by Julen Lopetegui also touched on the change in the format of the Champions League in the 2024/2025 season which uses 36 teams.
In Sevilla’s view, changes need to be made in discussions between associations, clubs, domestic leagues, without exception with any group in order to protect the football ecosystem.
“Sevilla realizes that sometimes changes like those made today by the UEFA Executive Committee regarding the format of the Champions League are needed,” said Sevilla.
