Shaq O’Neal has expressed feelings of jealousy towards current basketball players Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic.
The reasons for his jealousy vary, but it seems to stem from the belief that these players should not be considered the face of the league when compared to iconic players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, and Larry Bird.
Shaq’s comments have been interpreted by some as reeking of jealousy and superficiality. He has also been accused of being jealous of Jokic for winning more MVP awards than he did.
“I envy them. I wish I could go out and shoot threes, brother. But when I’m jealous, it’s not because of bad things, it’s to motivate me.” Shaq said.
“I envy them because I wish I could do that. Back then, every now and then, I would pick up the ball and go coast to coast.”
“However, the technician looked at me as if I were crazy. Nowadays, they can do that,” Shaq added.
While he appreciates Wembanyama’s talent, Shaq has given him a reality check by suggesting that he should strive to make a name for himself and not try to be like anyone else.
His skepticism about Wembanyama’s NBA potential seems to have changed over time, as he now seems to have a more positive view of the young player.
Shaq proceeded to share his thoughts on Rudy Gobert’s lackluster offensive skills and statistics.
The esteemed basketball player boldly stated that had he been playing in the present era, he would have commanded the same lucrative salary as the Frenchman, even a few years ago.
“What gets me is this guy has a $250 million contract. These and others are what bother you. Does he average 12 points and eight rebounds?” Shaq said.
“Man, I could be doing this if I was 42 years old. I would be making money like him. After all, 12 points? It would be easy.” he added.
