Should Pep Guardiola Abandon the Premier League Title Chase?

Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester city team will perhaps go down the best if not the greatest team in the English. What a remarkable way to finish with 100 and 98 points in their back to back Premier League title wins.

In the 2019/20 season, City’s unbeaten record has broken. Liverpool are now 14 points ahead of the defending champion in the Premier League table.

Speaking in an interview, City manager Pep Guardiola admitted it will be hard enough to beat Liverpool in the title race.

“It’s unrealistic to think about it catching Liverpool. When a team has the numbers that Liverpool has why should we think about it, when we are 14 points or 17 behind?” Guardiola said.

“Prepare, play good, be as close as possible, play the knockouts and prepare for next season. Next season we will be here and hopefully we can do better.” Guardiola added.

City used second-half goal from Sergio Aguero and Kevind de Bruyne to beat Sheffield 2-0 on Sunday night. It’s Guardiola’s best achievement in the Premier League so far.

“This achievement is a compliment for the club, the staff, 100 victories in 134 games is incredible achievement for this organisation, for all the staff and the people who did it,” Guardiola said.

“I’m alongside prestigious managers and the club, city is there and in front of them. That means what we’ve done in three seasons is incredible. Especially in the Premier League you have to be consistent, we are all delighted with this achievement.” Guardiola added.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager was eliminated in the last 16 by Monaco in his first season. And the last two years have seen City knocked out in the quarter-finals by Liverpool and Tottenham.

“Manchester City have only been big in the last decade, so we are new in this situation. If we win the Champions League, we will have arrived, but it is so complicated and so difficult.” Guardiola said.

“The Champions League is about arriving in the right moment, and you also need some luck. A goal that is four inches, offside, refereeing decisions, arriving in the later stages without a lot of injuries, or the other team may be better than you on the night.

“There are so many things that you cannot control, and normally when you have, history behind you, that also helps a lot.” the Spaniard added.
