Manchester United suffered their first Champions League defeat of the season, a 2-1 away defeat by Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night.
Demba Ba’s goal in the win over United has been described as facetious and embarrassing. Meanwhile Edin Visca added a second goal after a mistake from Juan Matta, and although Anthony Martial pulled one back before the break, United never looked like getting anything from the game.
Speaking at his post press conference, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he was not impressed with the performance of his side.
“The performance wasn’t good enough. The first goal, we played a short corner and forgot about then man up top, that’s unforgivable. The second one, we weren’t very well organised to counter press and win the ball back when we were defending.” Solskjaer said.
“It has set us back a lot, of course it has. You get a reality check every time you play a football game. You don’t just turn up and get three points in the Champions League.” Solskjaer added.
The Norwegian manager may be under pressure after United suffered two games on this week. Mauricio Pochettino is looking for his next challenge, and he was clearly a popular figure in the dressing room, which could help when it comes to potential incomings in years to come if United were to pick him
“I decline to comment on such a thing. Of course it’s early on, and opinions are out there all the time and you’ve got to stay. I’m employed by the club to do a job and I do that to the best of my ability with our staff.” Solskjaer said.
The Red Devils will travel to Everton this Saturday and Solskjaer has been warned that defeat to Everton could see him sacked as United manager.
“It’s not easy to be positive now, of course it isn’t when you just lost the way we did. But these players are good players and we have a chance on Saturday to get going again.” Solskjaer said.
