Atletico Madrid wrapped up a narrow victory over Real Valladolid in the 30th week of the Spanish La Liga which took place at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday (6/21).
Shown at home, Wanda Metropolitano without the presence of spectators, Atletico was not as fierce as they beat Osasuna 5-0 on Wednesday last week. The Valladolid faction performed better in the first round.
Atletico and Valladolid exchanged opportunities in the early minutes of the match. An opportunity for Waldo Rubio was rewarded by Alvaro Morata and Joao Felix in the first five minutes.
After a flood of opportunities, the game proceeded normally. Atletico had more ball in the first half, which is 63 percent. The ability to make the ball in the opponent’s defense area is not matched by an accurate finishing touch.
Valladolid, which relied on counterattacks, actually made Jan Oblak struggling under the rule.
Los Colchoneros tried to intensify attacks in the second half. Thomas Lemar and Thomas Partey collaborated in the middle to support Felix and Morata.
Valladolid goalkeeper Jose Antonio Caro looked less alert in anticipating the ball midway through the second half, but Atletico was unable to take advantage of these conditions.
Entering the 81st minute, starting from a corner kick, the imperfect rescue from Caro was not wasted by Vitolo who headed the ball into the goal.
The ball was driven away by Kiko Olivas, but the referee endorsed the goal and a double check by VAR ensured the ball had crossed the goal line.
An additional three points make Atletico now ranked third in the Spanish La Liga standings with 52 points equal to Sevilla. While Valladolid occupies the 15th position with 33 points.
In other matches, Getafe drew 1-1 when entertaining Eibar at the Coliseum Stadium Alfonso Perez. Getafe took the lead in that match through a goal scored by Oghenekaro Etebo in the 30th minute.
Eibar then replied towards the end of the first half thanks to Charles Dias de Oliveira’s goal. Eibar actually has a chance of winning the match if Pedro Bigas’s goal in the 86th minute was not annulled.
The goal was disallowed because Pedro Bigas in the VAR show was already offside when he received a Pape Kouli Diop cross.
A draw does not change the position of the two teams in the standings. Getafe remains ranked fifth with a collection of 48 points and two points behind Atletico Madrid in fourth. Meanwhile Eibar move to rank 16 with 29 points.
