This year’s Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, a biennial event hosted by Whispering Pines Golf Club, has been cancelled.
The board of directors for the tournament, scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 4, determined the need to support Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund efforts was a greater priority.
Eric Fredericksen, the tournament chairman, said a tournament task force would examine the amateur schedule for 2018 to determine if a suitable date for the tournament could be found. The Spirit International is a team competition with two male amateurs and two female amateurs representing their country. It alternates with the World Amateur Team Championship, which is held in even-numbered years.
The Spirit Golf Association, which is based in The Woodlands, uses amateur golf to raise money for charity.

Birdies for Kids fundraiser is Oct. 3
The annual Birdies for Kids fundraiser, which has raised $1.86 million to benefit various children’s charities in North Texas in 14 years, is scheduled for Oct. 3 at The Lakes at Castle Hills in Lewisville.
The event, which was begun by a handful of NTPGA golf professionals from Australia, has expanded to more than 20 clubs in North Texas. The participating pros play 72 holes and earn money for charity based on pledges received for making birdies and eagles.
A significant portion of the funds raised are designated for educational services through the NTPGA’s scholarship program. Pros also choose a children’s charity as a beneficiary.
