Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday reached Monte Carlo Masters finals for the second time in a row, after defeating Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-2. The German needed only 75 minutes to beat Zverev, in a dominant position.
The world number five will play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. After beating Novak Djokovic in the second round. Meanwhile Davidovich Fokina beat Taylor Fritz and Grigor Dimitrov both in three sets.
Tsitsipas’ high bouncing shots make it difficult for Zverev. The German player is always in a chasing position, after losing the first serve game.
The serving weapon wasn’t working on the clay court, leaving Zverev struggling to keep the game. He lost three of his five serve games in the first set.
Tsitsipas could have won even more if he hadn’t lost his rhythm in the fifth serve, trailing 0-40 and saving just one break-point.
The first match of the second set was more even, when both players quickly finished serving games and did not let the opponent break-point. But, Zverev is still the one who makes more mistakes.
In game six, he hit his forehand twice out and let Tsitsipas take advantage of the break-point. The advantage after this game helped Tsitsipas play excitedly and win the next game to increase the score to 5-2.
Zverev continued to decline in the game that had to be won after that. In the situation of facing the opponent’s match-point, Tsitsipas has the chance to overflow the net. But, he couldn’t score from the smash, then catch the volley into the net.
“It was good. I don’t know whether the long match gave me some rhythm, but I was able to play good tennis today. I’m happy with the level I was able to execute and come up with some good ideas on the court.” Tsitsipas said.
