The Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is set to replace Gregg Popovich as Team USA Men’s Basketball coach for the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Popovich coached the United States team to a fourth consecutive gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. They beat France 87-82 in the final. At the time, Kerr was one of Pop’s assistants on the team.
According to ESPN’s reporter Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Team USA was finalising the decision.
“USA Basketball is finalizing a decision to name Steve Kerr as the next national coach with an assistant coaching staff that will include Monty Williams, Erik Spoelstra and Mark Few, sources tell ESPN. A formal announcement is expected in the near future,” Wojnarowski said.
“Kerr will replace Gregg Popovich as Team USA’s next coach in the World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics. He was an assistant on Popovich’s gold-medal Olympic staff in Tokyo.” he added.
In 2014, Kerr became head coach of the Warriors. He is a three-time NBA champion as a head coach. Kerr won NBA Coach of the Year in 2016.
“This is Grant Hill’s first major decision as the new managing director of USA Basketball.” Wojnarowski said.
“Hill’s been meeting with potential candidates for several months and comes away with a staff that includes significant accomplishment on international, NBA and college stages.” he added.
Kerr has said he will be pleased to take the job as next USA basketball head coach desptite to compete alongside other candidates.
“Of course I would be interested. I mean, who wouldn’t? I’ll stop there. I have no idea how this is all going to turn out; there are a lot of good candidates. And if I had to be considered, it would be an honour.” Kerr said.
