Switzerland successfully defeated defending champion Italy with a score of 2-0 in the round of 16 match of Euro 2024 at the Olympiastadion, Berlin, Saturday (29/6).
Switzerland really made Italy helpless from the start of the match. Switzerland was able to appear dominant and control the match well.
They had created several dangerous chances that Gianluigi Donnarumma could thwart. The Swiss onslaught only paid off in the 37th minute through Remo Freuler.
Switzerland’s two winning goals in this match were scored by Remo Freuler in the 37th minute and Ruben Vargas in the 46th minute.
Remo Freuler’s first goal in the 37th minute came from Vargas’ mature assist. Then in the first minute of the second half, Vargas became Switzerland’s second scorer. Italy surrendered with a score of 0-2 in that match.
The defending Euro champions, Italy, are also confirmed to be eliminated faster at the 2024 European Cup. This result makes Italy’s hopes of back to back Euro champions certainly fail.
This means that the back-to-back record of Euro champions is still held by Spain who was able to become champions in two consecutive editions, namely in 2008 and 2012.
At that time, Spain managed to win Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland after defeating Germany 1-0 in the final.
Then Spain won the next edition of the Euro again in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, after beating Italy 4-0 in the final.
From the first edition of the Euro in 1960 to 2024, only Spain can become back-to-back champions. That record is still maintained by Spain after Italy as the champion of Euro 2020 had to be eliminated in the last 16 of Euro 2024.
In the Euro 2024 round of 16 match, Italy’s performance was indeed very unconvincing.
The Gli Azzurri team lost in possession and aggressiveness to Switzerland. Switzerland appeared very strong in possession of the ball and played very sharply in attack.
