Erik ten Hag says he will take a tough stance against Manchester United stars, including superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ten Hag was officially introduced as the new coach of the Red Devils on Thursday (21/4). The bald-headed man will officially coach at Carrington after the season’s competition is complete with Ralf Rangnick.
The coach who is currently dealing with Ajax Amsterdam was asked to restore the dignity of Man Utd as champions of the English League, Europe, and even the world. In the last decade, since Alex Ferguson left, Man Utd have struggled.
In order to restore this dignity, Ten Hag firmly stated that team collectivity is the key. Related to that, the status of a star player like Ronaldo will not get a special place. All players in the same capacity.
Indeed, Ronaldo is still the backbone of Man Utd. This season the man from Portugal collected 22 goals in all competitions. However, Man Utd’s achievements are not controlled by his playing style.
To Team Talk, Ten Hag emphasized that all players, including Ronaldo, must follow his playing style. If you don’t want this pattern, Ronaldo must choose to stay or leave.
“I’m not going to change my view on coaching. The material [of players] always dictates how you play, but I pointed out the requirements that come with it and the standards,” said Ten Hag.
“I tell who has what duty and who does not fulfill it will be notified of it, regardless of who it is. I make no concessions in that regard,” he said.
In his first interview with the media after Man Utd’s inauguration, Ten Hag laid out a set training line. He admitted that he was not a dictator, but his transfer policy was autonomous.
“Yes, I set conditions beforehand on how I wanted to work [at Man Utd]. If they didn’t deliver, I wouldn’t do it [coach Man Utd],” he revealed.
“I am responsible and accountable for the result. I don’t want to be the sole ruler, I support cooperation, but control in transfers is a condition for me,” he said.
According to BBC Sport observer Simon Stone, Erik ten Hag is a choice that was unanimously agreed upon by the Man United officials, who want a change at Old Trafford.
The process itself according to Simon Stone runs strictly and selectively.
There is also a reason why United finally chose Erik ten Hag, was because of the closeness of vision between the two.
The 52-year-old man who is still listed as Ajax coach, is believed to have a winning mentality and likes to play beautiful and attacking football.
In his interview for the hot seat, Erik ten Hag was called the one who was most capable of improving not only the quality of the players, but also the team as a whole.
