Erik ten Hag proved himself to be a specialist in quenching the thirst for titles after leading Manchester United to win the English League Cup. Erik ten Hag was appointed as the new coach of Manchester United at the start of the 2022-2023 season. Having stumbled at first, Ten Hag has started to stabilize Man United’s performence since the beginning of 2023.
His squad is starting to become familiar with winning. Most recently, Ten Hag presented victory to Man United in the final of the Carabao Cup, aka the English League Cup, Sunday (26/2/2023). Playing at Wembley Stadium, Ten Hag’s Man United won 2-0 over fellow Premier League team Newcastle United.
Casemiro (33′) and Marcus Rashford (39′) scored a pair of goals for The Red Devils in the English League Cup final. For Teng Hag, this is his first title with Man United. Ten Hag is the first Dutch coach to win the English League Cup. Not only that, through the English League Cup trophy, Ten Hag also managed to end the Red Devils title drought.
Prior to this, the last time Man United won a prestigious title was when they won the 2016-2017 Europa League with Jose Mourinho. After that, the Red Devils were actually able to penetrate the FA Cup and Europa League finals once each. However, they have always lost to Chelsea (2017-2018 FA Cup final) and Villarreal (2020-2021 Europa League final). Now, after 5 years and 278 days, Man United’s fasting for the title has officially ended with victory in the English League Cup final.
Erik ten Hag became Man United’s third manager after Mourinho was sacked in December 2018. In his first season at Old Trafford, Ten Hag immediately brought the Red Devils to the title. The former Ajax coach managed to end Man United’s worst title fasting period in the last 40 years.
This is not the first time that Erik ten Hag has quenched the thirst for titles for the team he has coached. In the 2018-2019 season, Ten Hag presented the Eredivisie title – the top caste of the Dutch League – for Ajax Amsterdam. Before that, the last time Ajax Amsterdam won the Dutch League was in 2013-2014. In addition to the Eredivisie title, Ten Hag also won the Dutch Cup with Ajax in the same season.
