Karim Benzema still has one challenge that he has never achieved during his career at Real Madrid: the El Pichichi trophy.
Last weekend’s match at Sevilla showed that Karim Benzema could still be a hero of Real Madrid in difficult times. Through a goal through his header, Real Madrid came home with a 1-0 win.
Benzema went through nine seasons in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo on the front lines of Los Merengues. Now, with Ronaldo moving to Juventus last season, Benzema could be the main star on their front lines.
Last season the Frenchman scored 30 goals in all competitions, 21 of which he scored in the Spanish La Liga. This result increased rapidly from the previous season’s record. In the 2017-2018 season Benzema only scored 12 goals in all competitions, 5 in the Spanish League.
This season there are still challenges for Benzema which he has never won in a decade in Spain, the El Pichichi trophy. Of the five games earlier this season, Benzema has scored five goals and is a top scorer with Gerard Moreno (Villarreal).
It is quite possible that he will win the El Pichichi trophy aka La Liga top scorer this season. Reported from Marca, since his arrival in Spain in 2009, he has always lost to Lionel Messi or Ronaldo. Since then, this title winner has never scored fewer than 30 goals in a season.
While Benzema’s best achievement was the 2015-2016 season, when he scored 24 goals. Although counted a lot, Benzema left behind 16 goals from Luis Suarez who scored 40 goals that season.
Last season with 21 goals, Benzema was 15 goals behind Lionel Messi, who became the top scorer with 36 injuries. Benzema’s worst record when only scored 5 goals in one season in 2017-2018 behind 29 goals from Messi (34 goals).
Even so, this season could belong to Benzema for several reasons. First, he became the most important player on the Los Blancos front line and was almost irreplaceable. Second, Lionel Messi suffered an injury at the start of this season and has not been able to score a maximum.
Now 32 years old, Benzema still has one challenge left at Real Madrid. “Benzema knows the challenges he faces, but his new role in the team allows him to dream,” Marca wrote.
