The Premier League is still hot with news of the 10-point deduction given to Everton because it was proven that they had committed financial fair play violations. Everton was declared to have had financial losses of almost 372 million pounds sterling in a three year period or far exceeding the limit set by regulations in force in the Premier League.
Several British media, such as Skysports, are still busy talking about this. The impact of the punishment against Everton is that now the threat of a 30 point deduction or automatic relegation from the Premier League will befall rich Premier League clubs, Manchester City and Chelsea.
This could happen if the Independent Regulatory Commission succeeds in proving the same violations committed by the two rich clubs, Manchester City and Chelsea. The sanction imposed on Everton is a one-time breach of Premier League regulations, while so far City have been charged with 115 alleged offences.
Imagine if all these allegations were proven, although the City case is unlikely to be resolved for at least the next two years. However, the potential for a breach of the Premier League’s rules on Financial Fair Play could be evident for both City and Chelsea.
The case that befell Manchester City has emerged again due to the Premier League’s official punishment against Everton. Meanwhile, the same case that happened to Chelsea is still being investigated by an independent Premier League team. Chelsea cannot avoid the same accusations that happened to the Manchester City club.
This is because the new owner has self-reported large payments that appear to violate Premier League regulations during previous ownership under Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich. Many predicted that Manchester City and Chelsea were at risk of relegation from the Premier League after Everton’s punishment set a strong precedent.
Some time ago the Manchester City case became so intense that there were rumors that Pep Guardiola would not renew his new contract after his job was finished. According to City’s former financial advisor, reigning champions Stefan Borson, a lawyer who advises City, said on social media after Everton’s 10-point deduction:
“Regardless of the 10-point deduction for Everton, the penalty feels heavy because of the Financial Fair Play breach. But it reinforces that sanctions against City if proven and now Chelsea if charged and admitting to off-the-books payments, will potentially lead to them being relegated.” Borson said as reported by Skysports (18/11/23).
The Premier League will face interesting days for City and Chelsea regarding the impact of the penalty on Everton’s 10-point deduction. Of course, the pressure on these two clubs has a big impact on their performance in the Premier League competition they are currently in.
Everton’s problems haven’t stopped there. This Merseyside club is also reported by three clubs, namely Burnley, Leicester and Leeds United. Everton will face a further nine-point deduction if Burnley, Leicester and Leeds are successful with their £300m compensation claims.
If that happens then Everton’s suffering will be even more complete. They will likely sell their best players in the transfer market in January 2024. Let’s just wait and see how firm the Premier League will be against Manchester City and Chelsea. Can they prove the violations they committed in terms of Financial Fair Play?
