Kaoru Mitoma scored the second goal, and helping Brighton beat Liverpool 2-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
Mitoma has scored his sixth in all competitions this season, after four in the Premier League and one in the League Cup.
He joined Brighton for a £2.5m from Kawasaki Frontale on the 2021 summer, then played for Belgian club Union SG on loan last season.
Back in Brighton, the Japanese striker shines and is currently valued at £8.7 million by Transfermarkt – the highest price in his career.
In the first 45 minutes, the two teams created an attractive tit-for-tat game. In the 4th minute, Mohamed Salah kicked from the right to the empty goal, but Lewis Dunk was able to come back to safe his post.
Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Chelsea 6-5 with a penalty shootout to win the Cup in the final at Wembley in last season.
Liverpool was also dethroned by Mancheter City in the League Cup with a 2-3 defeat at Etihad Stadium in the last 16 round at the League end of last year.
In the English Premier League, Liverpool are ninth with 29 points, ten points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
In the Champions League, they will play the defending champion Real Madrid in two legs of the last 16 round at Anfield on February 21 and at the Bernabeu on March 15.
On January 14, Liverpool faced a nightmare at The Amex when they lost 0-3 on January 14.
Their biggest defeat in the Premier League since the 1-4 defeat to Manchester City in February 2021.
Before Brighton that day, Klopp’s side became strong in only 6 six times, only once since the start of the 2016-2017 season have Liverpool had fewer shots in a Premier League game, with five against City in December 2016.
Liverpool were far different to their last visit a fortnight ago, with Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo particularly impressive, but it’s yet another terrible setback in a traumatic season.
