The story of Xabi Alonso’s biggest regret when he failed to lift the Premier League trophy with Liverpool is interesting to review. The reason is, the Premier League title was the only prestigious trophy that he failed to achieve with the Reds – Liverpool’s nickname.
Xabi Alonso’s name is currently on the lips thanks to his success in turning Bayer Leverkusen into a superior team. Becoming a coach at a very young age, the man from Spain has succeeded in ensuring that Die Werkself has not suffered a single defeat this season, so that they have the opportunity to win the 2023-2024 German League.
Xabi Alonso’s success in his coaching career seems to be a cure for his past failures as a player. How come? As a genius maestro in midfield, he should have the potential to win all the trophies in his career.
However, the fact is that the trophy haul was incomplete. With his first professional team, Real Sociedad, he failed to win La Liga. Then with Liverpool, he also failed to win the Premier League trophy.
Especially with Liverpool, it was a very painful failure for him. The reason is, he had extraordinary times at Anfield. Joining in the summer of 2004, he immediately won the Champions League trophy in his first season.
In fact, in the final match against AC Milan, he also scored a goal which made the trophy very meaningful. While at Liverpool, he formed a great midfield trio with Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano.
Liverpool had the opportunity to become champions in the 2008-2009 Premier League. However, who knows what happened, he and the Reds failed to win Liverpool’s first Premier League trophy after many years because they were defeated by Manchester United.
“I have some regrets,” said Xabi Alonso to FourFourTwo as reported by This Is Anfield, Wednesday (6/3/2024).
“Not winning La Liga with (Real) Sociedad, because we are very close (to the title), not winning the Premier League with Liverpool, because we are very close, and not winning the Champions League with Bayern (Munich),” he stressed.
With his glory as coach of Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso actually has the opportunity to pay for his regrets by becoming Liverpool coach and bringing him to the Premier League title.
After Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool at the end of this season, Xabi Alonso was predicted to be his successor at Anfield. However, at the same time, Xabi Alonso also entered Bayern Munich’s radar.
