FIFA has announced the top three nominees for the 2021 Men’s Player of the Year award. In the list of nominees listed on the official FIFA website, there is the name of the Polish striker who now plays for Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski.
Robert Lewandowski is the winner of the 2020 edition of the FIFA Best Player award. In the 2021 edition, he will compete with the other two remaining names, namely Mohamed Salah and Lionel Messi.
Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski previously occupied the top two positions in awarding another prestigious individual title, namely the 2021 Ballon d’Or. The 2021 Ballon d’Or trophy was then awarded to Lionel Messi, while Lewandowski had to settle for second place.
Mohamed Salah is also in the top list of nominees for the 2021 Ballon d’Or. However, the Egyptian winger had to settle for seventh place, just below Cristiano Ronaldo. After being ranked seventh in the list of nominees for the 2021 Ballon d’Or, Mohamed Salah is now in the top three nominees for the FIFA Best Player. Mohamed Salah has the potential to make a surprise in the midst of competition with Messi and Lewandowski.
In addition to the best male player, FIFA also announced the top 3 nominees for the best female player category. The women’s footballers who are included in the top three nominees for the 2021 FIFA Best Player are Jennifer Hermoso, Sam Kerr, and Alexia Putellas.
The three female footballers previously also occupied the top position in awarding the 2021 Ballon d’Or trophy. As a result, the 2021 Women’s Ballon d’Or trophy went to Alexia Putellas. Putellas who is now 27 years old became the actor of Barcelona’s victory when they won the Champions League when they beat Chelsea 4-0. Meanwhile, Jennifer Hermoso and Sam Kerr ranked second and third respectively.
