Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon revealed he was about to retire at the start of the 2018-2019 season. However, the top three clubs, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Real Madrid, changed his decision. Gianluigi Buffon moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Juventus at the start of the 2018-2019 season.
According to Buffon, he had almost decided to retire if the offer did not come. “I lost enthusiasm and almost retired. I thought that my decision would only change if PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona contacted me,” he said. He really changed his mind when PSG contacted. “All of that was originally just a dream, but it really happened. I was ready to retire, then PSG offered me a move and I thought for 2 weeks. Then I decided to play for another 1-2 seasons,” said Buffon.
The former Italian goalkeeper left Juventus in the summer after 17 years having won nine Serie A titles. Buffon said PSG would be his final club, adding: “I also want to stop playing at the highest level. I am not afraid of stopping, and it certainly will not be a problem if I am no longer competitive.” Currently, PSG goalkeepers are Buffon, Alphonse Areola and Sebastian Cibois.
Public assumed that Buffon’s decision to move to Paris Saint-Germain due to his obsession to win the Champion League title. As a matter of fact, while with his previous club for more than a decade, he has never hold the trophy of that most prestigious football award in Europe. However, Buffon denied that reason. “The Champions League is not my obsession. I accepted the offer because I thought I could progress both as a human and as a footballer”, said Buffon.
The 40 years old goalkeeper started his professional career in Parma, an Italian football club in 1995. After 6 years, he moved to Juventus and make 509 appearances from 2001 to 2018 period. Moreover, he was also named the greatest goalkeeper of all-time in the UEFA Champions League in an official UEFA online Twitter poll in 2016. The Italian also brought his country to win World cup in 2006.
