The fate of Marc Marquez is uncertain even though he has undergone a third operation. The latest news says, there is a possibility that the Repsol Honda racer will have surgery for the fourth time.
Marc Marquez just underwent surgery in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday (3/12/2020) local time. It was Marquez’s third operation to heal the fracture in his right arm. He got this injury after experiencing a terrible accident in the opening series of the MotoGP 2020 at the Jerez Circuit, Spain, in mid-July.
According to Repsol Honda, the operation, which took eight hours, ran smoothly. However, it was recently discovered that there was an infection in the humeral bone of Marc Marquez’s right arm.
The infection was actually discovered before the owner of the six MotoGP world titles underwent his third operation. However, after the third operation, it turned out that there was a new infection as before. This finding has also been confirmed by Repsol Honda.
“The condition of Marc Marquez post-surgery was confirmed by the medical team as no problem. However, the tests obtained during the nonunion surgery (psuedoarthrosis) have confirmed that there was previous infection in the fracture,” said a statement by Repsol Honda.
Regarding the current condition of Marc Marquez, Angel Villamor who is a traumatologist in Spain said that the 27-year-old racer will undergo another operation if the infection does not heal soon. Villamor explained that bone infections as Marquez’s are sometimes difficult to cure because of the lack of antibiotics to fight the lodged germs.
“Germs are lodged in the bone which is a network with few blood vessels. Therefore, the defense (of the body) has little access,” Villamor said. “What we all hope is, Marc’s natural defenses will be assisted by antibiotics so that he can clear the infection within a few days. However, if Marc Marquez’s infection does not go away soon, he will have to undergo a fourth operation,” said Villamor.
If have to undergo a fourth operation, Marc Marquez’s recovery phase will certainly go further back. Previously, after the third operation, Marquez was said to not move his arm significantly for the next 12 weeks before undergoing physiotherapy. Meanwhile, the new MotoGP season will start on March 28, 2021 in Qatar.
