US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has named Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker as two of his vice-captains for the 2018 contest at Le Golf National.
The pair join Davis Love III as part of Furyk’s backroom team, where the USA aim to defend their trophy and win on European soil for the first time since 1993.
Woods holds the position for a second time, having been a vice-captain for the USA’s 17-11 victory at Hazeltine in 2016, while Presidents Cup captain Stricker takes a backroom role for the third consecutive Ryder Cup.
“I am thrilled to once again serve as a Ryder Cup vice-captain and I thank Jim for his confidence, friendship and support,” Woods said.
“My goal is to make the team, but whatever happens over the course of this season, I will continue to do what I can to help us keep the Cup. I’m excited about the challenge ahead.”
Furyk will name further vice-captains at a later date prior to the contest from September 28-30, with the 47-year-old able to name replacements should one of his backroom team qualify as a player.
“To win in Paris will be a great challenge, and to have Steve and Tiger share in the journey is important for me and for American golf, ” Furyk said.
“The deep appreciation they both have for competition, the concept of team, and the Ryder Cup is infectious. Their knowledge and experience will be an invaluable resource in our effort to retain the Ryder Cup.”
Woods has made seven Ryder Cup appearances as a player, most recently in 2012 at Medinah, while Stricker played in three consecutive USA Ryder Cup teams from 2008.
“This is a great honour for me, and I am once again thrilled to be a vice-captain and to join Jim and the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup Team,” Stricker said.
“We plan to keep the momentum and the spirit of Hazeltine alive and channel it to our advantage in Paris. I am ready to get to work and do all that I can to ensure that we hold on to the Cup.”
