Southampton on Wednesday made an impressive comeback against Tottenham Hotspur bwhen Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams sealed a 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The host Tottenham took the lead in the 18th minute thanks to an own goal from Jan Bednarek, however, striker Armando Broja corrected his teammates with an equalizer only 5 minutes later.
Southampton were the better side for most of the game, so it’s understandable that manager Antonio Conte celebrated with excitement as Son Heung-min gave Tottenham a 2-1 lead after 70 minutes of Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams in the 80th and 82nd minutes gave Southampton a well-deserved victory.
“We made a lot of mistakes in the first half, important mistakes. In the second half we did well, scored and then we should have defended better.” Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said.
“I know very well that we will work very hard to get the three points. We’re improving in many ways, but we’re still overwhelmed by emotions.
“The team has to improve because if you want to grow as a team and compete for titles, the first thing you have to have is stability.” Conte added.
Tottenham could have gone on points with fourth-placed West Ham, with three games left in hand, if they had won against Southampton.
Instead, the bitter defeat left the Rooster still in 7th place and coach Conte knew that a great opportunity in the race for the top 4 had just been lost.
After going unbeaten in his first nine Premier League games against Tottenham, a club record, Conte has now suffered consecutive defeats, following a loss to his former club Chelsea in January.
“We need to focus more on controlling the game. This is a situation that we must improve. Effort is maximum, today I see the commitment of the boys is maximum. But we made a lot of mistakes, especially with the ball.” Conte said.
“I think this is the reason that has created a bit of instability, mental instability in my team.” the Italian manager added.
